Why do my category links redirect to random posts on other people blogs ?

Foliovision › Forums › FV Top Level Categories › Bug reports › Why do my category links redirect to random posts on other people blogs ?

    Hi!

I started using this plugin on a syndication feed I have when one of the WP updates, I think it was 3.1, broke the older similar plugin. At first I had an issue with it because of how I’m using subcategories, like I have one parent category and 5 child categories and I wanted the navigation links to point to the child category pages only (like ‘http://blog.com/child-A/’, ‘http://blog.com/child-B’, ‘http://blog.com/child-C/’, ect.) and for a while the new plugin couldn’t work. But that got worked out.

Now I have updated to 3.3 just yesterday and now each of my category links not only are broken but they redirect to posts on other people blogs (posts syndicated in each respective section of my feed).

Did some piece of code change in 3.3 that is causing the plugin to no longer function for me and is there a workaround by any chance ?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hello bergamasque,

we had to fix FV Top Level Categories to work with WordPress 3.3. Check out the latest version please.

Do you mean that you want to link to your child categories like ‘http://blog.com/child-category’ instead of ‘http://blog.com/parent-category/child-category’ ? I’m afraid that won’t work with our plugin anymore – even if it used to in the older version. We had to fix some parts of it, as the category feed links were not working when using /%category%/%post-name% structure.

    Thanks,
    Martin

Also, if you try to open a link like ‘http://blog.com/child-category’ and the correct link is ‘http://blog.com/parent-category/child-category’ – then the WordPress will try to redirect you to some post or page I think which has similar slug. So that would be the reason to the weird redirection issue you are seeing.

    Thanks,
    Martin

I remember now I actually had to remove the category parenting to make this plugin work; all of my categories were children of the default ‘Uncategorized’, or ‘All’ as I renamed it. But all my categories are now currently unparented, as they have been since I began using this plugin.

So, besides that I can’t figure why the plugin stopped working. Here’s how things work for now: ‘http://blog.com/travel/’ redirects to random posts on other people blogs (posts that are syndicated in the current category we’re trying to access) but if I add ‘category’ in the URL, like ../category/travel/ then the link points to the correct category page on my blog.

Oh ok, I just saw your replies, and I’m going to update now.

No go, it’s still doing that. And the strange thing is that the redirection to blog posts outside of my website occurs in most browsers, including Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer but in my usual browser, Opera, the category links just point to an error page.

Also, I would like to stress that the redirection when it happens points to pages not on my blog but on other people blogs, and there’s no similarity in how the URLs are formed. All I can see is that the link for each of my 4 categories consistently point to the same blog posts (except for one that only goes to an error page on my site).

    Hello bergamasque,

that is really weird. I would suggest that you try to turn off our plugin and see what happens. If it still persists, then you can start turning off other plugins until you find the reason.

    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hi Martin,

Thank you. I wasn’t using a lot of plugins but it appears there was about half of them that I wasn’t using or that weren’t necessary so I did some cleaning up and after deleting or deactivating a bunch of plugins, the category links got working again. Strangely enough, they even worked when YOUR plugin was deactivated as well. Go figure! But I’m glad all is good again. Until another WP update brings new trouble, I guess!

    Hi bergamasque,

thanks for your report. Perhaps re-generating the permalink rules is what helped.

    Thanks,
    Martin
